A new chapter — Lorraine’s journey to community and ease at Beacham by Teman
Ready to downsize and escape the cold, Lorraine menser decided it was time for her next chapter — and it’s been one that has completely reshaped her view on retirement living.
Originally from New South Wales, Lorraine planned on relocating to be closer to her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. She was just searching for an easy place to live in Gladstone, Queensland.
But when she came across Beacham by Teman, she found so much more than warmer weather and proximity to family — it was a vibrant community that offered both security and a sense of belonging.
This story is about Lorraine’s transition, and how she found moving into a retirement village — a move she had never planned, but quickly became an extremely rewarding decision.
Moving into a retirement village — change, convenience, and community
Lorraine had been living a contented life in New South Wales when the idea of moving closer to her growing grandchildren became appealing:
“I’ve got a daughter and her husband and two grandchildren living up here. And I thought, well, I’ll get away from the cold, down where I was living, and come up here to the warmer weather.”
Despite her initial reluctance to transition to a lifestyle village, the benefits soon became clear — with proximity to loved ones, warmer Queensland weather, and the elimination of household maintenance chores like mowing and gardening soon becoming just the tip of the iceberg.
Upon her arrival at the village, Lorraine was struck by the convenience of its location:
“It’s so close to everything…five minutes to go down to the shops, and then you’re back. Where I lived before I was an hour away. So coming here is just amazing, because everything’s here, you know, and it’s only five or ten minutes away.”
This ease of access not only brought physical convenience, but also allowed her more time and energy to engage with her family — and her new friends.
Living in a retirement village — activities and engagement
A typical week for Lorraine is filled with activities and social interactions — she participates in the weekly bingo night, helps a good friend organise frequent Hoy games, and enjoys the happy hour every Wednesday.
Lorraine’s involvement goes beyond just participation — she’s instrumental in planning and running various social functions, often taking the lead in organising community events. “I feel good that I can help people,” she shares, making the community more inclusive and active.
Making friends during retirement — connections and support
The social fabric of the village is woven tightly with threads of friendship and mutual support. Lorraine speaks warmly of the relationships she’s developed, which have significantly enhanced her quality of life.
“One of the things that surprised me most is the friendships, and being able to get involved as much as I have. I don’t sit back, I just get involved.”
Another particular highlight is a recent Christmas event, where residents and their families came together to celebrate, with all the grandchildren decorating the Christmas tree together:
“A lot of people have their Christmas do here. Or they have birthday parties, and they bring their family. We had a Christmas event where the kids all came and decorated the Christmas tree, and that was really amazing. A lot of the parents came, and grandparents. It was a really good event.”
This was just one example of the free, monthly events that Teman holds at every village.
Lorraine’s commitment to the community shines through her daily interaction — whether it’s serving coffee at morning tea or assisting someone with the door, these small acts of kindness make a big impact — to both Lorraine, and her friend.
“They give you a hug or a kiss and say, ‘that’s so nice of you’ … I get a good buzz out of that.”
Benefits of downsizing for retirement
Downsizing from a larger home to a more manageable living space was another aspect of village life that Lorraine found liberating. While some new residents struggle with this transition, most find it cathartic, Lorraine’s prior experience of living in a smaller cottage made it easier for her.
She encourages new residents to embrace the art of downsizing, highlighting how it can lead to a more focused and enjoyable lifestyle.
“If you downsize, it makes you feel better. You don’t have all this clutter around you.”
For many, the process of downsizing isn’t just about physical space, but about making room for new experiences and relationships.
And, as an added bonus, many find that they actually have access to more space after the move. Their living area may be smaller, or perhaps they’ve moved from four bedrooms to two, but there’s the added benefit of access to facilities and function rooms that can be used for events, parties, or just a change of scenery while sitting back with a good read.
Moving into a retirement village
Despite initial apprehension — and assuming that the only benefits would be proximity to family and warmer Queensland weather — Lorraine is living a fulfilled life that’s enriched by the new friends she’s made, the activities that she’s taken up, and a quality of life she’d never expected.
Her story is a testament to the unexpected joys that can come with embracing new phases of life.
