Hidden Benefits of Starting a New Life in A Retirement Village

For Jacquie Liddiard, a resident of Lakeside by Teman, moving into a lifestyle village was something that she had “absolutely no intentions” of doing.

But she now describes it as the best move she could’ve made, and her story of downsizing and transitioning into a retirement village highlights one of the hidden benefits of lifestyle living.

Moving Into A Lifestyle Village

Jacquie was still working as an IT and Senior Admin Manager when her husband, a few years older, expressed the thought of moving into a retirement village. Though she initially opposed the idea, her husband was tired of living in the inner city.

She initially came around and agreed to start looking, but it still wasn’t a decision they made lightly:

Five years after they started their search – visiting multiple houses and villages all over the area in which they lived – they finally settled on Lakeside by Teman in Ravenswood, WA.

Jacquie recalls liking multiple aspects of each of the different villages they visited, but only one of them had the community feel she’d heard so much about, stating that it felt “like a small town.”

Plus, there’s a growing body of evidence that shows just how important having a good community and strong relationships are for our overall health.

How To Downsize

Jacquie admits that downsizing was a difficult task, especially so as they had a large home with a theatre room on a huge block.

However, she found that the process of giving away precious possessions and furniture was easier than figuring out what would fit in their new home.

“We just took virtually everything except our prized possessions and just gave it all away. And then when we came down, we refurnished.”

Her advice to others is to give away “those precious things that you’re not going want for the rest of your life” and, if you can afford it, purchase new items to start fresh.

“It’s easier, it’s fun, and it gives you a new lease on life.”

What’s it Like Living in A Retirement Village?

One of the biggest advantages of lifestyle living is the social aspect – that “community feel” that the pair had searched for for half a decade.

Jacquie loves trying new things, but her favourite pastimes are participating in quilting, cards, and darts. She also helps to run the coffee shop – a social hub in the village where people love to catch up over their morning cup of coffee or tea.

Whether you’re getting involved with activities and hobbies that you’re used to, or you decide to try out something new – Jacquie says there’s no better way to meet people.

“Making friends in the village is probably the easiest thing – just go to the events and you’re bound to find people you click with. You can’t go to all of them, there are just so many, but choose the things you think you like or are interested in.”

However, she does advise people to get involved sooner rather than later. “There’s so much to enjoy,” and you’ll want to make the most of it.

Facilities and Pets

In terms of facilities, Lakeside by Teman near Mandurah offers residents a brilliant selection, including a bowling green, gym, golf putting green, spa, and – Jacquie’s favourites – the recently upgraded swimming pool and sauna.

There’s also storage for your boat or caravan, so you can keep all of your recreational gear safe and secure when you’re not out adventuring.

The best part? Your family are more than welcome to come and use all of the same facilities with you, so you can share the fun and make memories together all year round.

Jacquie also speaks highly of the dog run, which has been a great way to meet other residents, and believes that having pets is “so important for companionship, especially for those who don’t have extended family.”

We couldn’t agree more, which is why all Teman lifestyle communities are pet friendly.

Care and Support During A Difficult Time

Losing a loved one is never easy, and for Jacquie, it was a heartbreaking experience. But it also highlighted a hidden benefit of moving into a lifestyle village.

Her husband, who was ultimately the reason that the pair moved into Lakeside Teman, unfortunately passed away less than a year after the move.

Jacquie says that without the community of Lakeside, she doesn’t know how she would have coped.

“If I hadn’t been at Lakeside, it would have been exceedingly difficult. Neither of us had extended family, so without the support and the care of the staff, management, and residents, it would have been a very different experience. I’m so pleased I’m here and not outside.”

Being surrounded by friendly neighbours – and having her beloved pet by her side – gave her the support she needed during one of the most difficult times of her life.

Jacquie’s experience highlights the importance of finding a good community and like-minded companionship in a lifestyle village, regardless of where you’re looking or when you’re thinking of making the move.

Because it’s this support and companionship, the relationships you form, that make the hard times better and the good times great.

When Should I Move Into A Retirement Village?

From your lifestyle and travel options to your health and social life – there are scores of benefits to making the move, but at the end of the day, it’s a personal decision that should be based on your individual needs and preferences.

So it’s a good idea to research different options, visit potential villages, and talk to current residents to gain a better understanding of what it’s like to live there before making a decision.

If you ask Jacquie, however, her advice is simple:

Don’t wait.

“Seriously, just do it. Forget what you’ve had in the past. Start afresh. It’s a wonderful place to live, and you just feel like you should have been here 10 years ago.”
